Why 808 nm and Not Some Other Wavelength
Hair follicles are targeted through their pigment: melanin sits in the bulb and the bulge, and it is the chromophore. Three wavelengths dominate the field, and each is a compromise between absorption and reach.

808 nm is the middle path. Melanin still absorbs it — enough to load the follicle — but absorption is gentler at the surface, so more energy survives the trip down to the bulb. That is the reason an 808nm diode laser machine can be used across a wider range of tones than a shorter-wavelength system, and it is why the wavelength, not the wattage, is the number worth remembering.
What the Light Becomes
Once absorbed, the light converts to heat within the follicle. The follicle is a small structure, so it has a short thermal relaxation time — meaning it cannot get rid of that heat quickly. The practical result is delayed, not immediate. Heat-inactivated follicles shed their hairs over days to a couple of weeks, which surprises first-time clients who expect to see a bald patch walk out. Cooling: The Part That Decides Whether It Hurts
Everything above wants a hot follicle. Nothing above it wants heat at all. The epidermis carries the same melanin that is competing for the beam, so on any tone the surface needs active protection during the pulse.
Contact cooling does the job through a sapphire window pressed against the skin: it chills the surface immediately before and during each flash, and it also flattens the skin, which improves optical coupling and makes the pulse more predictable. That pairing is also why you should never compare two diode lasers on watts alone: a big cooled window and a modest source often out-perform the reverse.

Where the Risks Actually Are
